The white concrete Three Crosses memorial is visible from afar. Once at the top of the hill, you can enjoy stunning views of Vilnius' Old Town. At the base lies the Bernardine Garden, with the Vilnelė River flowing nearby. The 12-meter-high monument has become a symbol of national identity, often illuminated to mark significant events for Lithuania and the world.
A brief history:
In the 12th-13th centuries, a wooden castle and settlement stood on the Three Crosses Hill. According to legend, seven Franciscan monks were martyred here, tied to crosses, and thrown into the river by pagans. The hill was named after this event, with three crosses erected in their memory. However, some historians suggest that the crosses were placed to commemorate Vilnius receiving Magdeburg rights, following the example of other cities.
